How to Choose a Gold IRA Company

Choosing a Gold IRA company is partly a dealer decision and partly an account-infrastructure decision. Good due diligence looks past review badges and asks who does what, what it costs and how you get out.

Financial information notice: This page is educational, not personalized investment, tax or legal advice. Verify current rules and provider terms before acting.

Key points

  • Ask for written fee schedules.
  • Get both buy and sell pricing.
  • Confirm which custodian will hold the IRA.
  • Confirm which depository will hold the metals.
  • Ask whether storage is segregated or non-segregated.
  • Understand liquidation and distribution procedures.

Dealer questions

What exact products are being recommended? What premium or spread is embedded in the purchase price? What would the dealer pay to repurchase the same items today? Are representatives compensated differently for different products?

Custodian questions

Which institution is the legal IRA trustee or custodian? What are its setup, annual, transaction, distribution and termination charges? Will you receive statements directly from it?

Storage questions

Where are the metals held? Is the arrangement segregated or non-segregated? Who insures the facility and what does the storage agreement say about access and distributions?

Red flags

Guaranteed returns, claims that gold cannot lose value, pressure to move your entire retirement account, unclear spreads, reluctance to provide written costs, and tactics designed to create fear should all slow the decision down.
