Gold IRA Costs: Fees, Spreads, Storage & Custodian Charges

The most visible Gold IRA costs are often the annual custodian and storage charges. But the most economically important cost can be the gap between what you pay to buy metal and what you could receive when selling it.

Key points

  • Account setup or application fee.
  • Annual custodian/maintenance fee.
  • Depository storage fee.
  • Dealer buy/sell spread.
  • Potential shipping, distribution or termination fees.

Custodian fees

Self-directed IRA custodians may charge setup, annual maintenance, transaction or asset-related fees. Request the custodian's own current fee schedule rather than relying only on a dealer summary.

Storage

Depository pricing can vary by provider and storage type. Ask whether quoted storage is segregated or non-segregated, what insurance arrangements apply, and whether pricing changes with account value.

Dealer spread

Dealers buy and sell metals at different prices. Ask for both sides of the quote on the same product at the same moment. This makes the spread visible and helps you understand the hurdle a position must overcome before it is profitable.

Exit costs

Ask about wire fees, shipping, account termination, in-kind distributions and liquidation procedures. A provider should be able to explain how you would get money or metals out before you put money in.
