Gold IRA Rollover Mistakes to Avoid
Most rollover mistakes are process mistakes, not investment-selection mistakes. A missed deadline, wrong payee or misunderstood distribution can create tax consequences before you ever choose a gold coin.
Key points
- Do not confuse a direct transfer with a 60-day rollover.
- Do not ignore withholding on distributions paid to you.
- Do not assume every account or distribution is rollover-eligible.
- Do not personally acquire metal intended for the IRA.
- Do not skip total-cost comparisons.
Taking the check without understanding withholding
A retirement-plan distribution paid to you is generally subject to 20% mandatory withholding even if you intend to roll it over. A direct rollover avoids that withholding on the transferred amount. IRS source.
Missing 60 days
When the 60-day rule applies, missing the deadline can turn what you expected to be a rollover into a taxable distribution unless a waiver or exception applies.
Breaking the IRA rollover limit
The one-rollover-per-year rule can apply to IRA-to-IRA 60-day rollovers. Trustee-to-trustee transfers are not subject to that limitation.
Buying first, asking later
IRA eligibility is product-specific. Have the custodian confirm that the metal and transaction satisfy the account's requirements before purchase.
Augusta currently states a $50,000 minimum order. If that fits the amount you are considering, review its current materials and ask for up-to-date costs before making a decision.
