Precious Metals Portfolio Checklist
Before buying precious metals, write down the reason for the allocation, the time horizon, the expected costs and the exit plan. A short checklist can prevent a marketing pitch from becoming the investment thesis.
Key points
- Define the portfolio problem you are trying to solve.
- Decide whether you need physical ownership, market exposure or both.
- Compare Gold IRA and non-IRA structures.
- Estimate all ongoing and transaction costs.
- Plan liquidity and exit procedures.
- Verify tax implications independently.
Purpose
Is the goal diversification, direct physical ownership, a tactical view on metal prices, or something else? A precise objective makes it easier to reject products that do not fit.
Structure
Decide whether the asset needs to be inside a retirement account. An IRA can provide tax advantages but also adds custody rules and distribution constraints.
Economics
Record purchase price, estimated spread, annual costs and expected holding period. A high-cost structure needs more favorable price movement simply to break even.
Exit
Know how you will liquidate, who will buy, how long it can take, and whether you may need cash during a market decline.
